Abstract
During their development, adolescents often face problems in the process of physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional changes. In dealing with various problems that arise, adolescents tend to make exploratory efforts to find solutions or adaptive strategies so that they can adjust to the current conditions. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether there is an influence of parenting styles or self-esteem on adolescents' adaptation in boarding schools. A quantitative approach was used with multiple regression analysis techniques. This study uses three measurement instruments: a parental parenting style questionnaire calculated using Baumrind's parenting style scale, whose items were developed by Steinberg and consist of 26 items; a self-esteem questionnaire divided into 10 items referring to aspects of self-respect and self-acceptance based on Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (RSES); and an adaptation questionnaire derived from Hurlock's theory. The subjects of this study were adolescents at one of the Islamic boarding schools in Ponorogo. The sample size was 110 adolescents out of a total population of 189. The sampling technique adopted was simple random sampling, which involves selecting sample members from the population randomly without considering the strata within the population. The data analysis revealed an R-square value of 0.253 with a p-value of <0.001, indicating a significant influence of parental upbringing and self-esteem on adolescent self-adjustment in boarding schools, accounting for 25.3% of the variance. This means the study demonstrates the influence of parental upbringing and self-esteem on adolescent self-adjustment, but most of the self-adjustment is also influenced by other factors outside the scope of this study.
